Starring: Tom Hanks, Robin Wright, Gary Sinise, Sally Field This was flat out one of the best movies of 1994. It won best picture for a reason, along with a few other Academy Awards. I think one of the tag lines for the movie was, "The world will never be the same once you've seen it through the eyes of Forrest Gump." How true. The movie is basically one si-mp-le man's journey through life. And what a journey.

The movie opens with Forrest (Hanks) sitting at a bus stop, waiting to go see Jenny (Wright) after being apart from her for years. Who is Jenny, you ask? We'll get to that in a minute. Forrest strikes up a conversation or two with the people that come and wait for the bus with him. Or, more accurately, he keeps talking regardleof whether anybody is listening or not. The movie plays out as a flashback, with Forrest taking us through all the major events of his life and narrating them.

The flashback starts when Forrest is a little boy, about six years old or so, just at about the age where he should be starting school. We get to take a look at Forrest's childhood as he gets leg braces to straighten out his back, as his momma (Field) fights (and does a few other things) to get him into public school, and as he meets for the first time the love of his life. Jenny. He meets her on the way to school, sitting next to her on the bus, and they strike up a friendship immediately.

Eventually we progreto the point where Forrest and Jenny are in high school, and we travel along with Forrest as he makes it onto the football team and gets to go to college. Forrest and Jenny never date, but he's always there to protect her. Anytime he thinks she's in trouble, he rushes to the rescue, ready to beat the ever-loving snot out of anyone who even looks at his Jenny wrong. I think one of my favorite scenes in the movie is when someone is dumb enough to slap Jenny. The film goes slow motion, Forrest's eyes go wide, and he starts charging at this guy like a runaway locomotive, and has the striking force of one too. Watching him beat the crap out of that guy is hilarious.

As Forrest grows up and goes through school, college, the army, a Vietnam tour, becomes a ping pong celebrity, a shrimp boat captain, and eventually one of the richest men out there, he also gets to take a few stops in history as the filmmaker gives us his own spin of how he thinks history would have happened if Forrest Gump were there. He gets to meet the President three times, he's the man who exposes the Watergate scandal, he's at the school doors when Governor George Wallace tries to get some Negroes into a white school, and so on and so forth. It's really funny the way they manipulate historical footage to insert Forrest into the events of the past.

This is truly a great movie. You'd be a fool to miit。

through the first person narrator, edgar allan poe's "the tell-tale heart" illustrates how man's imagination is capable of being so vivid that it profoundly affects people's lives. the manifestation of the narrator's imagination unconsciously plants seeds in his mind, and those seeds grow into an unmanageable situation for which there is no room for reason and which culminates in murder. the narrator takes care of an old man with whom the relationship is unclear, although the narrator's ***ment of "for his gold i had no desire" lends itself to the fact that the old man may be a family member whose death would mo***arily benefit the narrator.

moreover, the narrator also intimates a caring relationship when he says, "i loved the old man. he had never wronged me. he had never given me insult".

the narrator's obsession with the old man's eye culminates in his own undoing as he is engulfed with internal conflict and his own transformation from confidence to guilt.

the fixation on the old man's vulture-like eye forces the narrator to concoct a plan to eliminate the old man. the narrator confesses the sole reason for killing the old man is his eye: "whenever it fell upon me, my blood ran cold; and so by degrees - very gradually - i made up my mind to rid myself of the eye for ever".

the narrator begins his tale of betrayal by trying to convince the reader he is not insane, but the reader quickly surmises the narrator indeed is out of control. the fact that the old man's eye is the only motivation to murder proves the narrator is so mentally unstable that he must search for justification to kill. in his mind, he rationalizes murder with his own unreasonable fear of the eye.

the narrator wrestles with conflicting feelings of responsibility to the old man and feelings of ridding his life of the man's "evil eye". although afflicted with overriding fear and derangement, the narrator still acts with quasi-allegiance toward the old man; however, his kindness may stem more from protecting himself from suspicion of watching the old man every night than from genuine ***passion for the old man. the narrator shows his contrariety when he confesses he loves the old man, but he is still too overwhelmed by the pale blue eye to restrain himself from the all-consuming desire to eliminate the eye.

his struggle is evident as he waits to kill the old man in his sleep so that he won't ha一ve to face the old man when he kills him; but on the other hand, the narrator can't justify the killing unless the vulture eye was open. the narrator is finally able to kill the man because "i saw it with perfect distinctness - all a dull blue, with a hideous veil over it that chilled the very marrow in my bones; but i could see nothing else of the old man's face or person: for i had directed the ray as if by instinct, precisely upon the damned spot".

the mission of the narrator begins with meticulous planning and confidence, but ultimately his guilty conscience creates his downfall. for seven days, the narrator watches the old man while he sleeps and he even "chuckled at the idea" that the old man knows nothing of the narrator's "secret deeds or thoughts". the narrator's ***ments show his confidence and audacity, even pride, in his plan to kill:

"never before that night had i felt the extent of my own powers - of my sagacity. i could scarcely contain my feelings of triumph". the narrator's assurance in his evil deed continued even when the police came to check on the old man and investigate the loud noises neighbors heard the night before:

"i **iled,-for what had i to fear? i bade the gentlemen wel***e". however, the narrator's mind is quickly consumed with guilt, which creates his delusion of hearing the old man's heartbeat taunting him from under the flooring.

his paranoia makes the heart beat "louder - louder - louder!" and in his state of delirium he confesses to killing the old man in hopes of ridding his life of the menacing heartbeat: "i felt that i must scream or die!

- and now.

the narrator sets out to rid his life of the fear he created by obsessing over the man's eye, but once that fear is destroyed, another fear - that of the heartbeat - is created and be***es more overwhelming than the first. in playing mind games with himself - seeing how far he can push himself to triumph over his own insanity - the narrator slips further into a fantasy world. his overriding confidence in killing the man ultimately turns into overriding guilt even as he justifies in his mind the sa一vage killing, chopping up the body and placing it under the floorboards.

the narrator's imagination creates his need and plan to destroy the eye, but it then creates the need to sa一ve himself from the heartbeat that drives him over the edge.

Why Mulan sticks out as a great Disney film.I was impressed by this Disney film for so many reasons, too many to list here, but I will go on the record as saying that Mulan has got to be one of the best Disney female characters that ever saw production, in the midst of a colorful and artistic film, that will resonate in your memory.Mulan sticks out in my mind for this reason. For once, we have a strong female lead, or at the least, stronger than most of them. She isn't counted among the Disney “princesses” line-up.She doesn't want for herself, and she seeks to look deeper within herself to discover her inner being. She isn't like Ariel, who wants to be someone else. She isn't like Jasmine, who sits in luxury, waiting to be swept off her feet by Prince Charming, just like Snow White, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, and almost any female character that Disney brings to life. And while she does share some traits among this list, she stands out because she does something that these do not.She uses her mind.Mulan, in fact, has more in common with male Disney leads than the female Disney leads.Mulan is a thinker, and a do-er.She's resourceful, like Aladdin. She is quick to act, like Eric(mermaid.)And she sacrifices herself for the sake of others, like Hercules. She also speaks her mind, even in a culture that does not allow such a thing. She doesn't waste time pining about “will I ever find true love?” Indeed, we see that she has an attraction to Shang(as he was her husband in the legends,)but we see her uncomfortable and unsure of meeting the Match-maker.She begs for her father's life when Chi-Fu came to the village. When you see her make her decision to take her father's place in the army, she does so out of her love for him, valuing his life above hers. She doesn't wish to become a man to see what it is like or for a change.Only to save his life. She later doubts herself and her reasons for going, but she did so because of her inner strengths, something other female Disney leads too often lack.(And it is these strengths that Shang is attracted to at the end.)This movie also has a simple, but very effective villain, Shan Yu.Though not as memorable as Jafar or Ursula, he is more effective and more menacing because he is not fantastic.By that, I mean that he is not magical, he holds no special power. He is portrayed as a man, and as a man that could have truly existed, performing vicious acts that men do.We see the destruction that his army lays to a village, and when Mulan finds the doll, it shows that Shan Yu left no one living, man, woman or child. This is what makes him so effective as a villain, showing how truly human he indeed is.Granted, the producers did not develop him in any great depth, but they showed enough of him to remind us of his threat to China.Besides, sometimes the better villains are the ones you don't know too much about, or see a lot of.Of the rest of the supporting cast, I will only mention four of them as being memorable in any real way.Chi-Fu, the emperor's consultant, was a reminder of the way many men looked at women in this culture. He thrusts his head up when Mulan begs for her father's life, and when she is discovered to be a woman, though she is a hero, he is quick to insult her, and to order her execution, simply because she impersonated a man.The other three were, of course, her comrades, Ling, Yao, and Chian Po.Though they were mainly comic relief(almost like a 3 stooges set,)they remained loyal to Mulan and trusted her fully, even after she was discovered.I like them, because they were not discriminatory to her in any way, even trying to stop her execution. When Mulan told them she had an idea to help the emperor faster, they were the first to her side, even when Shang was still reluctant to do so.Overall, a wonderful movie to the Disney list.If you haven't seen it, then do so, you won't regret it.And yes, Mushu was a cool character as well.**** In Response to an earlier post by Phoenix-1 **** To expect any movie to accurately portray history in any way is lunacy.Even those movies that come close to historical accuracy are flawed in many ways. This was a way of telling a story, as any movie is.It can be argued that it tries to provoke curiosity in another culture, but it is also meant to entertain.I would also like to point out that Mulan is really not “historical,” like Joan of Arc, but rather she is a legend, much like Hercules and Aladdin, who also come from the realm of myth, stories and legends. And while there is some difference between the original legend and this movie, your examples of how Disney would butcher tales of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln do not compare to this story in any way.Your arguments for comparison should be better applied to Pocahontas, as she was an actual historical figure.

Somewhere, under the sea, weak-finned clown fish Nemo(Alexander Gould)lives with his fretful father, Marlin(Albert Brooks).Smothered by pop‘s paranoia, he ventures away from the reef, but his dad‘s dread is justified when a passing diver whisks him away.Taken to a tank in a Sydney dentists, Nemo meets Gill(Willem Dafoe)and co-friendly fish who dream of escaping to the ocean.Meanwhile, Marlin bumps into a blue tang named Dory(Ellen DeGeneres), and sets out to save his son...The splendour of natural history hit The Blue Planet is matched by the wit of the script and stars.Barry Humphries has a terrific cameo as a great white shark who‘s sworn off killing(Remember, fish are friends, not food!), while DeGeneres provides perfect timing and tone as Dory, whose short-term memory loss is a gag that never stops running.

The novel opens with the famous line, "It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.". and ends with two marriages: Jane and Bingley's, as well as Darcy and Elizabeth's. Both couples are assumed to live happily ever after.

Elizabeth (Lizzy) Bennet is the core of the family. Elizabeth is the second of Mr. and Mrs. Bennet's five daughters, and is an intelligent, bold, attractive twenty-year-old when the story begins. In addition to being her father's favourite, Elizabeth is characterized as a sensible, yet stubborn, woman. Misled by his cold outward behaviour, Elizabeth originally holds Mr. Darcy in contempt. However, she finds that Mr. Darcy improves on acquaintance, more so than she would expect.

Fitzwilliam Darcy (commonly known as Mr. Darcy) is the central male character and Elizabeth's second love interest in the novel. He is an intelligent, wealthy, extremely handsome and reserved 28-year-old man, who often appears haughty or proud to strangers but possesses an honest and kind nature underneath. Initially, he considers Elizabeth his social inferior, unworthy of his attention, but he finds that, despite his inclinations, he cannot deny his feelings for Elizabeth. His initial proposal of marriage is rejected because of his pride and Elizabeth's prejudice against him; however, at the end of the novel, after their relationship has blossomed, he is happily engaged to a loving Elizabeth.

Role of women in the 18th century

In late-18th-century England, women were relegated to secondary roles in society with respect to property and social responsibilities. For example, women were not permitted to visit new arrivals to the neighbourhood (such as Mr. Bingley in Pride and Prejudice) until the male head of their household had first done so. Women were under enormous pressure to marry for the purpose of securing their financial futures and making valuable social connections for their families. Therefore, marriage, though romanticised, was in many ways a financial transaction and social alliance rather than a matter of love. Although Jane Austen did not condone loveless marriages (she stayed single all her life), she did approve of matches having equality in various respects, including wealth, social status, love and character. In Pride and Prejudice, wealth, social status, chastity (and the perception of chastity) and physical attractiveness are depicted as factors affecting a woman's chances for a good marriage.

Much of the plot of Far from the Madding Crowd depends on unrequited love — love by one person for another that is not mutual in that the other person does not feel love in return. The novel is driven, from the first few chapters, by Gabriel Oak's love for Bathsheba. Once he has lost his farm, he is free to wander anywhere in search of work, but he heads to Weatherbury because it is in the direction that Bathsheba has gone. This move leads to Oak's employment at Bathsheba's farm, where he patiently consoles her in her troubles and supports her in tending the farm, with no sign he will ever have his love returned.

This novel focuses on the way that catastrophe can occur at any time, threatening to change lives. The most obvious example occurs when Oak's flock of sheep is destroyed by an unlikely confluence of circumstances, including an inexperienced sheep dog, a rotted rail, and a chalk pit that happens to have been dug adjacent to his land. In one night, Oak's future as an independent farmer is destroyed, and he ends up begging just to secure the diminished position of a shepherd.

This novel offers modern readers a clear picture of how important social position was in England in the nineteenth century and of the opportunities that existed to change class, in either direction. In the beginning, Oak and Bathsheba are social equals: he is an independent farmer who rents his land, and she lives on her aunt's farm next door to his, which is presumably similar in value. The only thing that keeps her from accepting his proposal of marriage is the fact that she just does not want to be married yet. After Oak loses his farm and Bathsheba inherits her uncle's farm, there is little question of whether they can marry — their social positions are too different. She is more socially compatible with Boldwood, who owns the farm next to hers and is in a similar social position.
